Why escaping Zurich’s city stress works best at Greifensee

Of all the spots in Zurich to slow down and take a break, Greifensee is probably the local favourite that not everyone knows about.

As someone who’s grown up navigating the city’s trams and cobbled lanes, I’ve come to rely on Greifensee for a different pace altogether.

My first time cycling around the lake had nothing to do with being sporty—I just needed to get away from my neighbour’s nonstop accordion music.

If you’re after a guide that’s less about box-ticking and more about genuinely escaping the ordinary, you’re in the right place. Let’s set off and see what makes Greifensee such a beloved haven for us locals, and why you’ll likely find yourself coming back, too.

Where is Greifensee?

greifensee-google-maps-location

Greifensee is located northeast of Zurich, in the canton of Zurich. It sits between the towns of Greifensee and Uster. The lake is surrounded by nature reserves and small villages, making it a nice spot for a day trip away from the city bustle.

What is the main landmark in Greifensee?

The main landmark in Greifensee is Schloss Greifensee, a medieval castle right in the centre of the old town. The castle dates back to the 13th century and is well known for its historic architecture and scenic setting near the lake.

How to get to Greifensee

By Foot: If you’re already in the town of Greifensee or somewhere nearby, walking is a great option. The paths around the lake are well-marked and scenic, especially if you enjoy some fresh air and want to take in a bit of nature as you go.

By Tram: There is no direct tram route to Greifensee. However, you can take a tram to Zurich suburbs like Stettbach or Schwamendingen, then transfer to a bus or S-Bahn train to complete the journey.

By Train: The most straightforward way is by S-Bahn. From Zurich Main Station, take either the S9 or S14 S-Bahn line. The ride takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, making it a quick and easy experience.

By Car: Pop Greifensee into your GPS, and head northeast out of Zurich. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the city centre. There’s parking near the lake, especially around the village and popular spots like Maur or Uster.

By Bike: There are dedicated cycling routes from Zurich to Greifensee. You can follow the signposted Zürichsee–Greifensee path. It’s a scenic ride and super popular with locals, taking about 45 minutes, depending on your pace.

Whenever I fancy a break from the city buzz, I always head straight for the 19-kilometre Greifensee lake trail loop. There are plenty of quiet woodlands and green stretches, and the trail is super easy to follow.

One of my favourite parts is passing through the cosy little villages and picnic spots along the way. You’ll spot locals chatting over coffee or just kicking back by the water, and it’s a great place to join in or take a break yourself.

Keep your eyes peeled too—herons and swans love to hang out near the shore, and I always get a kick out of how much wildlife there is here.

Schloss Greifensee is a medieval castle right in the centre of Greifensee village, and it’s a great spot for a day out. As you walk through the castle, you’ll see thick stone walls, twisty stairs and even old cellars.

If you’re like me and enjoy a good adventure, you’ll love poking around the old cellars and spotting little details. Kids get excited searching for secret corners, and honestly, adults aren’t immune to a bit of exploring either!

One of my favourite things is the view from the castle windows and gardens; you get a stunning look out over the lake and the peaceful countryside. Every now and then, there’s an exhibition or local event happening.

I love checking for dishes like pumpkin soup or game stew, especially when it gets chilly outside.
