How to enjoy the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich on any budget
I’ll never forget my very first stroll down the Bahnhofstrasse. Armed with nothing but my camera phone and dreams of finding the best hot chocolate in town (priorities, right?), I was surprised by how much more there was to uncover.
I found a patchwork of street performers, centuries-old buildings, and quirky little side streets where old-school Swiss charm still lingers.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to soak up the vibe, although a stop for a cheeky pastry might be inevitable.
So, whether you’re a window-shopping enthusiast or just someone keen to see what the fuss is about, Bahnhofstrasse has a way of winning people over—one cobblestone and cappuccino at a time.
Where is Bahnhofstrasse?

Bahnhofstrasse is right in the heart of Zurich. It runs from Zurich’s main railway station, known as Zürich Hauptbahnhof, all the way down to Bürkliplatz by the lake. The street goes straight through the city centre, so it’s almost impossible to miss if you’re exploring central Zurich.
What is the main landmark in the Bahnhofstrasse?
The main landmark on Bahnhofstrasse is Zürich Hauptbahnhof, which is Zurich’s central railway station and one of the busiest in Europe. It’s right at the top of the street and acts as both a gateway to the area and a major reference point for anyone exploring the city centre.
How to get to Bahnhofstrasse
By Foot: If you’re already in Zurich’s city centre, Bahnhofstrasse is an easy stroll. It starts right at the main train station (Zürich Hauptbahnhof) and runs down to the lake, so you can hop on at whichever point suits you.
By Tram: Several trams stop directly along the Bahnhofstrasse, including lines 6, 7, 11, and 13. Just hop off at the Bahnhofstrasse or Paradeplatz stops and you’ll be right there.
By Train: Catch any train to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (the main station), and you’ll find yourself right at one end of Bahnhofstrasse. Just step outside the station and you’ll see the street stretching out in front of you.
By Car: Driving into central Zurich can be a bit of a challenge due to the traffic and parking restrictions. If you do fancy bringing a car, look for one of the city centre car parks like Urania or Hohe Promenade. From there, it’s just a short walk to the Bahnhofstrasse.
By Bike: You can use the city’s signposted cycling routes to reach the area. There are bike racks available at Bahnhofplatz (right in front of Zürich Hauptbahnhof), near Paradeplatz, and along Uraniastrasse, which runs parallel to Bahnhofstrasse
