When I visited Swiss Surgery’s proctology department, I was struck by the calm professionalism that began with Prof. Franc H. Hetzer himself.

“I can’t say enough about the excellent, top-notch professional care I received from Prof. med. Jan Schmidt, along with his assistant Dr. Olga Meier, when I had to have colon and liver surgery in April of 2021. I am a 62-year-old male, and I was referred to Prof. Schmidt in March 2021 by my oncologist, Dr. Lucas Widmer, after 3 months of chemotherapy for colon cancer which had spread to my liver. It was a very serious situation, but the chemotherapy was very effective, and the next step in the treatment process was surgery. From the first consultation, until the day I was discharged from the hospital, under Prof. Schmidt’s care, I knew I was in the best hands possible. Throughout the process, Prof. Schmidt proved to be warm and caring, patient, he had a good sense of humor, and he exuded confidence and competence. The surgery was a great success, and I had no complications. I also had no significant pain or discomfort. It’s been three and a half months now since my surgery, and I have made a rapid and successful recovery so far, that I attribute for the most part to the excellent surgical skills, competence and experience of Prof. Schmidt. Unlike some other private clinics, Hirslanden welcomes everyone, regardless of whether you have basic, semi-private, or private insurance. So, if you’re dealing with a proctological issue, your insurance class won’t limit your access to top-notch care.
It’s important to keep in mind, however, that private hospitals in Switzerland are generally more expensive.
While Hirslanden does accept all insurance classes, some treatments, services, or amenities may come with additional costs, especially for those holding only basic insurance.
Still, during my visit to the clinic, I was impressed by how modern and well-maintained the facilities are.
A nurse pointed out their advanced operating theatres and procedure rooms, highlighting the clinic’s readiness for a wide range of minimally invasive proctological treatments.

“My personal experience today 03/05/2021. An appointment for Gastroenterology at 09:00. We arrived at 8:45 a.m., upon entering a very nice guy offered us a new mask and guided us where to go. At the reception there were 3 workers, we were immediately attended by a very attentive girl who guided us where to go. We arrived at the consultation and at the reception everything was fast, the girl explained to us that there could be no companions due to the small size of the place and the need to comply with the measures, we understood perfectly and left our number so that she would call us if necessary. I went to the main reception and there they invited me to wait seated. The living room very comfortable, newspapers available. I expected the test to take 2 hours but at 20 minutes, they had already finished, we left with a good diagnosis and a referral to another consultation.
