Why Bellevue Square in Zurich is the city’s true centrepiece
Bellevue Square in Zurich is more than just a busy intersection; it’s a cultural hub where art, history, and everyday life intersect.
With just a few tram stops from the main station, you get to see a place where leisure meets cultural sophistication. It’s the kind of place where opera-goers, cafe loungers, and tram hoppers all cross paths.
Intrigued? Let this be your insider’s look.
Where is Bellevue Square?

Bellevue Square is located in District 1, right where the old town splits into the lakeside. It’s bordered by the Limmatquai to the west, Lake Zurich to the south, and Sechselautenplatz to the east.
It’s a major tram hub with nearly every line in the city passing through.
What is the main landmark in Bellevue Square?
The most popular landmark in Bellevue Square is the Zurich Opera House. Famous for its grand neoclassical image and housing world-class performances, it’s the heart of the culture of the place.
How to get to Bellevue Square
By Foot: Bellevue is a 15-minute walk from Zurich’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Stroll along the scenic Limmat River for a picture-worthy route into the heart of the city.
By Tram: Hop on lines 4 and 11 from Zurich HB, and you’ll reach Bellevue in about 8 minutes. The stop is also served by lines 2, 5, 8, 9, and 15–making it one of Zurich’s most accessible travel hubs.
By Train: The closest train station is Stadelhofen, with just a 5-minute walk from Bellevue. This is a convenient option if you’re coming from outside the city or nearby areas.
By Car: You can drive to Bellevue Square by passing through Ramistrasses or Utoquai. The nearest parking option is Parkhaus Opera, located just a short walk from the square. It’s open 24 hours and offers underground parking near the Opera House.
By Bike: Zurich has numerous bike-friendly lanes that make cycling a great option. Follow the routes along the Lake Zurich shoreline or the Limmat River. Once you’re at Bellevue Square, park at the bike racks near Sechselautenplatz and Burkiplatz.

Inside, the chandeliers, velvet seats, and live orchestra make you feel like a royal in the palace, more than a visitor in a venue. The programmes offer a diverse range of timeless pieces, including Mozart and Verdi.
In the summer, the Opera House hosts free outdoor film screenings in the plaza. It’s a beautiful way to introduce Zurich’s culture and create unforgettable memories without spending a single Franc.

The Bellevue Promenade is a popular spot where people jog, stroll, eat ice cream, and even sunbathe. It’s the kind of place where locals walk their dogs or share a bench to relax. Best of all, it offers an incredible view of the Alps—snowy peaks plus the golden light of sunset.
This is also the time to admire Zurich’s scenic views after a day of exploring. You might also hear street musicians near the railings or under the chestnut trees, playing smooth jazz or classical music for the crowds.
This lakeside stretch offers more than just the views because the food is also something to look forward to. You can grab a cone of Monchhof am See’s gelato or taste the rich and creamy espresso of one of the cafes.

Both tourists and locals visit Quaibrücke for souvenir photos and good shots. It’s a favourite among content creators and even casual travellers because of the breathtaking views of Lake Zurich.
Here, golden hour hits differently, especially at around 6:30 PM. The sun goes behind Uetliberg, and the water shimmers like gold.
You have Lake Zurich in front of you too, with the Alps in the distance and Grossmunster towers to your left. Burkiplatz has sailboats parked in the area, making the view and vibe more pleasing.
Sometimes, you’ll spot swans floating just below the bridge or other tourists paddling and going around in white sailboats.

Pedalos (paddleboats) are a popular way to explore Lake Zurich when visiting Bellevue Square. They give you a chance to not only have some exercise, but you also get front row seats to one of the city’s most beautiful places.
If pedalling sounds like too much effort, rent a small motorboat instead. Rates start at around CHF 50 per hour. Afterwards, you can head to Konditorei Peclard and grab some pastries before starting your next activity.
On the other hand, you can engage in other locally loved activities, such as swimming at Lakeside Baldi, stand-up paddleboarding, or having a picnic by the water. If you start walking until you reach Zurichhorn, you’ll see the famous Chinese Garden.

During December, Bellevue Square turns into a winter wonderland. There is a wooden stall selling fondue, roasted chestnuts, and locally made food. Others sell gingerbread, mulled wine, and holiday treats.
Kids can ride the vintage carousel while grown-ups sip on glühwein as the street bands play carols. It’s a perfect Christmas postcard, with crisp air, rosy cheeks, and a busy crowd trying to catch up on gift shopping.
I also stumbled upon Lichtmanufakter Zurich, a stall selling hand-poured candles (of course, I bought some!).
Then, I picked up a handwoven scarf from Wollwerk. Amazingly, the scarf has endured many winters (and counting). The Christmas market is indeed like having a treasure hunt.

Cafe Odeon is a popular place because it used to be a famous gathering spot for some well-known personalities of the 20th century. Albert Einstein was a regular at the cafe during his time, and James Joyce reportedly edited his drafts of Ulysses here.
I went in and tried some of the best sellers—creamy Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and beef tartare. If you’re a fan of brunch, they have selections like eggs Benedict and French toast, which is a crowd favourite.
Their drinks range from house coffee and tea to refined cocktails. They have a house special called “Odeon Spritz,” which was delicious. To complete the classic Zurich cafe experience, choose a table outdoors on a sunny afternoon.

Just a few minutes’ walk from Bellevue Square, Rosaly’s Restaurant & Bar is a modern establishment that combines Swiss cuisine with international dishes. You can try the Rosti and white wine combo or the steak tartare with fries.
And what I like the most is that their menu changes with the seasons, so you know that there’s always something new to choose from. Still, favourites like Wiener Schnitzel or Bratwurst mit Rosti remain solid go-tos any time of the year.
Their signature Rosaly Spritz is a must-try. It’s made with Prosecco, elderflower, and homemade syrup. I tried it, and it was slightly floral and sweet with a crisp taste.

One of the most notable features of dining at Haus Zum Ruden is the medieval vibes. It’s set inside a 14th-century guildhall with arched ceilings, carved woodwork, and classic chandeliers. It’s like a storybook coming to life.
Swiss classics and dishes like Fillet Rossini and Zürcher Geschnetzeltes are highlights of the restaurant. I got to try their tasting menu (I highly recommend this for newcomers), and had a bit of everything.
Whether you’re new to the area or a local wanting to try a unique dining experience, Haus Zum Ruden has a lot to offer. It feels like transporting back in time—coats of arms on the walls and woodwork reflecting the Gesellschaft zur Constaffel (a medieval noble).

Just steps from the Opera House, Santa Lucia is the go-to for pizza lovers. And trust me, everything hits the spot. This bustling Italian restaurant serves wood-fired pizzas with crisp crusts, risottos, and distinctive pasta dishes.
Their pizzas are baked in a traditional stone oven that gives the bread its signature puff. The pasta is always al dente (I promise!) and made with premium ingredients like buffalo mozzarella, truffle cream, and fresh meat.
And save some room for dessert! The Aperol Spritz and tiramisu are a winning combo, especially if you’re sitting on the terrace watching the busy street and trams go by.

Overlooking the Munsterhof square, Zufnthaus zur Waag is set in a 17th-century guild house that makes your dining experience feel like a trip to the past. You’ll see crystal chandeliers with wood-panelled seats that once accommodated politicians.
Their strength lies in sticking with the classics. The restaurant’s version of the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes with Rosti is made exactly how locals like it—creamy, tender, and flavourful. Their fondue is also served with traditional sides.
And don’t miss out on their house Pinot Noir from the Bundner Herrschaft either. It’s crafted exclusively for Zufnthaus zur Waag and tastes delightful with other main dishes.

This family-run watch and jewellery boutique is a Zurich attraction that many visit. They offer a wide range of choices, from classic Swiss timepieces to curated or customised watches. Galli blends traditional designs with modern accents.
They also offer elegant dress watches, mechanical chronographs, and custom-made jewellery. I tried looking for local Swiss brands like Tissot or Hamilton, and surprisingly, the store had pieces that even large department stores don’t have.
Galli Uhren also offers bespoke engravings and on-site adjustments. What I would suggest is to always ask for the vintage-inspired designs for a wider selection of one-of-a-kind pieces.
