Chasing sweet bliss at the top 10 cupcake shops in Zurich

There’s nothing quite like a cupcake. They’re perfect for those days when you want a quick, sweet treat. Since I moved to Zurich years ago, I’ve found myself drawn to the city’s many cupcake spots (it’s almost become a little hobby of mine, as a sweet tooth).

But not all cupcakes are made the same. Some shops experiment with flavours, and others even go fully vegan. It’s amazing how much variety you can find in something so simple.

So, if you’re on the hunt for the best cupcake shops in Zurich, you’re in luck. I’ve put together a list of my personal favourites. These are places I’ve tried, loved, and keep coming back to.

1. Bonne Maman

  • Monday to Friday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Saturday: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Pricing:

There’s nothing more comforting than a cupcake from Bonne Maman. A combined effort by Bonne Maman and Zurich’s first cupcake shop, The Cupcake Affair, they sell some of the best cupcakes in Zurich.

All of their cupcakes are made fresh and finished at their boutiques. With over 15 different flavours to choose from, I tend to mix and match my orders to include one of each..

The main cupcakes that I always buy are their vanilla, red velvet, and blueberry cupcakes. I also love their chai karamel fleur de sel, which has hazelnuts on top.

Pro Tip:
When gifting cupcakes or bringing them to a function, I often choose the mini cupcake gift box that comes with twelve different flavours. For more romantic situations, I go for the mini box of two.

2. Michelle’s Cupcakes

  • Saturday: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Pricing:

Michelle’s Cupcakes has been serving Zurich’s sweet tooth every day since 2009. It was a trip to one of London’s cupcake shops that inspired Michelle Burke to start baking. It sets into motion the creation of one of Zurich’s most beloved cupcake shops.

Their motto here is “Keep It Simple,”  and I can honestly say that they’ve been keeping up with that motto. With classic flavours such as red velvet and vanilla constantly available for guests, the menu offers a delightful variety.

I love that they don’t have a minimum order limit, and I can simply pop by for a single sweet cupcake. I go for the vanilla schoggi cupcake with buttercream, or the Snickers cupcake if I come by on a Saturday.

Pro Tip:
When hosting special events like weddings or birthdays, Michelle’s Cupcakes provides wholesale discounts for its cupcakes. The best part about this is that you can easily decorate each cupcake with a unique topping of your choice.

3. Steiner Flughafebeck AG

  • Saturday: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Pricing:

Steiner Flughafebeck AG has a variety of pastries that I simply can’t get enough of.

Their cupcakes are sold in packs of at least 10 pieces for variety, and a single order is more than enough for 2 people. These cupcakes come with four different flavours, mainly schoggi, mocha, vanilla, and lemon. They must be ordered 48 hours in advance.

Aside from the cupcakes, they also have other types of aperitif available. The main ones I go for are the Thon-Törtli, Frischkäse-Pastetli, and the Sardellen-Weggen. I also frequent the bakery for mega sandwiches that I share with a few co-workers for lunch.

Pro Tip:
Steiner Flughafebeck AG has eleven different locations operating in Zurich. Aside from the one I’ve mentioned, there are also two locations in Zurich Airport: one in Wipkingen and one in Hongg Wartau.

4. Confiserie Bachmann

  • Monday to Saturday: 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM

Pricing: ₣₣

Confiserie Bachmann is a beloved shop in Zurich that offers a wide variety of pastries. Their speciality include the bruschetta and large canapes.

I fell in love with their round cakes, piggy bank cakes, and photo cakes. All of these are customisable to the client’s choice and come in different flavours, my favourites being black forest and chocolate cream.

The star of the shop is their cupcakes. Coming in regular and mini varieties, they’re as highly customisable as their larger cousins. They even come in platters of 16 to 24 or 24 to 30, depending on the size.

Pro Tip:
Confiserie Bachmann can print logos, templates, or photos on their cupcakes and cakes. These come with a small printing fee that is already included in the initial cost. For more complex logos, there may be an additional charge.

5. Bakery Bakery

  • Saturday: 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Sunday: 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM

Pricing:

Bakery Bakery is Switzerland’s largest vegan bakery that has even won a Guinness World Record. Many of my vegan and non-vegan friends flock here because of how good their pastries are. Their offers are also incredibly cheap.

Their location has a modern aesthetic to it, and often includes seating, which isn’t common with other bakeries. They offer other types of pastries too, with croissants and doughnuts.

I personally found their cupcake selection to be a bit sparse, but they were delicious nonetheless. With only two different flavours, vanilla and matcha, these cupcakes are still great takes on them. They’re pillow-y and soft, with a sweet buttercream on top.

Pro Tip:
Before heading to their store, I highly suggest looking through their website or social media. They sometimes post unique discounts for certain products, and there are even vouchers available at certain times of the year.

6. Cupcake Heaven

  • Saturday: 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Pricing:

Cupcake Heaven is a small cupcake shop located in Thalwil. In their store, they sell coffee and a variety of different cupcake flavours. What I find great is that their menu is constantly updated.

I love staying at their shop when the weather permits, especially whenever I’m able to sit at their small terrace. The calm view is the perfect place to enjoy some nice coffee and their delicious cupcakes. They also have indoor seating, though it’s very limited.

With over 36 different classic flavours, I simply had to sample a few at a time. So far, my favourite ones are the Nutella temptation and creamy Baileys. When ordering a batch, they require you to order 12 per variety a week before the pick-up.

Pro Tip:
Cupcake Heaven offers other types of sweet treats too. For customised orders, you can choose from different types of candy or chocolate bars. These can either be integrated into the cupcakes or be a separate treat for your guests.

7. Abi’s Cupcakery

  • Tuesday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM | 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Pricing: ₣₣

Abi’s Cupcakery is a small home business located in Dübendorf. While they don’t have a storefront, they’ve quickly grown into a trusted business for their homemade goods. Abi herself makes all of these cupcakes from scratch, and they’re all made to order.

I was pleased that they don’t use any artificial flavouring or colouring in their cupcakes, resulting in a rustic look to them that’s incredibly unique. They also use natural ingredients to decorate them, like freeze-dried berries or nuts.

Abi sells her cupcakes per box, with each one having a theme. My personal favourites are the berry box, with raspberry and blueberry cupcakes. There’s also the chocolate box, which is chocolate cupcakes with vanilla and Bailey’s icing.

Pro Tip:
Abi can also make stylised cakes. To avail yourself of this service, you simply need to email her to see if she can fit you into her schedule.

8. Sugar & Smiles

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Pricing: ₣₣

Sugar & Smiles offers a healthier type of cupcake. They make customised cakes and cupcakes using unrefined sugars without artificial colouring or flavours. I was also surprised that their cupcakes and cakes are egg-free, while some are fully vegan.

Though I was disappointed that they only have four flavours—chocolate, vanilla, lemon, and carrot—I was pleased that they have a wide range of toppings. My favourite from the ones I’ve tried was the dark chocolate ganache and the coconut buttercream.

Whether you’re looking for mini cupcakes or regular-sized ones, Sugar & Smiles provides both in 24-piece or 12-piece options, respectively. They can even make specialised cupcakes, like Jungle Safari cupcakes with animals and rainbow cupcakes.

Pro Tip:
If you’re looking for something sweeter for a larger group, I’d highly suggest checking out their cheesecake. It’s available in round and square forms and is topped with either strawberries, caramelised nuts, or chocolate ganache.

9. The Cake Company

  • Saturday: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Pricing: ₣₣

Honestly, The Cake Company has spoiled me for choice. They have some of the most customizable cupcakes on the market, utilising all sorts of fondant and printed logos to deliver some of the most unique cupcakes that you’ll ever get to eat.

They have eight different cupcake flavours to choose from, with highlights being vanilla, Snickers, and Oreo. I love their fruity flavours, like raspberry and lemon, which give a more tart cupcake.

Aside from those, they also have mini cupcakes. These are 12 or 24 pieces each and come in either vanilla or chocolate. There’s also an option for edible logos for work events.

Pro Tip:
A unique offering that they have is their Afternoon Tea set. This comes with a variety of scones, sandwiches, and cupcakes, accompanied by a good helping of tea. I prefer this when celebrating a special occasion with close friends or family.

10. Emma’s Bakery

  • Saturday: 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Sunday: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Pricing:

Emma’s Bakery has some of the most artistically pleasing cakes and cupcakes I’ve seen. They are a labour of love from their main baker, Manuel Mendoza, who oversees the creation of tasty cakes that leave a lasting impact on their customers.

Ordering from them is easy. You can choose between a base of chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet for your cupcakes. These come in boxes of either 12, 24, or 48 and can be delivered or picked up from their bakery, with the pick-up option being a bit cheaper.

Aside from cupcakes, they also create wonderful multi-layered cakes. These cakes come in layers ranging from 2 to 4 and can serve guests of up to 30 people.

Pro Tip:
When celebrating a small event with a partner, you might want to try their popular mini cakes from Korea. These are small cakes with simple icing that can have any message you want.
