These top 5 kindergartens in Zurich make early learning fun and creative

  • Safe and Nurturing Environment: I looked for places that not only focus on academics, but also on outdoor time and playing as a means of learning. This helps the children grow emotionally and feel nurtured.
  • Bilingual or Multilingual Setup: I prioritised schools that offer bilingual instruction (German and English), as many families speak more than one language at home.
  • Structured curriculum and Programmes: I selected kindergartens that focus on early academics and foundational life skills. I also chose those that help kids transition smoothly into primary school.
  • Upfront and Honest Pricing: I searched for centres that offer on-site consultations with parents to discuss prices, inclusions, and additional fees (such as meals and aftercare).
  • Good Feedback from Parents: I looked for schools that have good online reviews from previous and current clients. Public reviews reveal a great deal about how the school and its staff ensure a quality education for the children.

Starting kindergarten is a significant leap, not just for kids, but for their parents too. It’s the start of a new learning journey, and choosing the right place can feel like one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.

What really matters is finding a space where children feel safe, understood, and supported. Many kindergartens in Zurich ensure that they offer all three, plus various approaches and curricula, for a comprehensive overall experience.

So, we’ve gathered the best schools around the city to help guide your decision, one step at a time.

How much do kindergarten programmes cost in Zurich?

On average, kindergarten programmes in Zurich cost between CHF 500 and CHF 2,500 per month, depending on the curriculum, student-teacher ratio, and extracurricular activities. Some include free lunch in the payment, while others don’t.

Montessori Kindergarten Sonne offers a bilingual environment for kids 2 ½ years old to school age, blending Montessori principles with a well-structured daily routine. This encourages independence and self-directed learning for all students.

Many parents commend their “all-day care” programme, running from 7:15 AM to 6:15 PM. It includes accessible block times, providing families with flexibility in school times and a well-planned daily schedule.

I really value how the school takes learning beyond the classroom. They offer semester courses in collaboration with qualified teachers who have years of experience. These include ice skating, swimming, dance, art and theatre, and yoga.

While the small class size ensures each child gets plenty of attention, spaces are limited. With only a few slots available per batch, early enrollment is essential if you don’t want to miss out.

Pros

  • Bilingual environment (German and English)
  • Blends Montessori principles with structured daily routines
  • Has an “all-day care” programme with flexible block times
  • Offers semester courses
  • Highly-qualified teachers

Cons

  • Limited slots per batch

The staff was very engaged and focused

“Both our sons attended the Montessori Kindergarten starting even before age of 3. They were take care of really well, developed tremendously there and enjoyed going there every day. Staff was very engaged and focused. Kindergarten is quite small and this allows individual focus on every child. I can recommend Sanela and her services.”

I really appreciated the strong sense of community

“It’s our son’s last day at Kindergarten Montessori Sonne, and he’s sad to leave. He has spent nearly three years there—two in kindergarten and some time in preschool—and he was always excited to go. He loved the wonderful teachers and all the cool activities they did at school. At home, he was eager to recreate and talk about what he had learned. As a parent, I really appreciated the strong sense of community and the loving, nurturing environment the teachers provided. I’m especially happy with Sanela’s and the kindergarten’s focus on developing well-rounded little humans. Our son is definitely ready for school! Luckily, our daughter—who has been going there to preschool since she was 2—will soon start kindergarten, so we’re excited to continue being part of this great school for a few more years.”

I visited Kita Regenbogen with a friend who’s looking for a school for her daughter. They work with children of mixed ages, ranging from 3 months to 5 years old. This setup is like one big happy family for the students.

The staff employs a bilingual approach (German and English), enabling students to become fluent in both languages.

I appreciate that their curriculum is based on a combination of free play and structured activities, including storytime, sensory projects, and outdoor adventures.

One standout feature is their developmental psychological counselling, which supports early attachment experiences. I value the idea of the bond between children and their caregivers, which has a positive impact on each child’s skills and needs.

The only downside, according to some parents, is the lack of Montessori programmes. Families seeking a more specific educational approach may find the curriculum too general or not specialised enough.

    Pros

    • Mixed-aged environments (3 months up to 5 years old)
    • Bilingual approach (German and English)
    • Promotes developmental psychological counselling

    Cons

    • Lack of Montessori programmes

The programme is designed to cater to the children’s individual needs

“The Regenbogen daycare center was a very special experience for my son and for us as a family. The program is designed to cater to the children’s individual needs. My son was able to choose his own activities every day and was constantly included. His ideas were taken seriously and implemented as best as possible. There were also always great activities for the whole family that everyone enjoyed. We found the care to be sensational. I highly recommend this daycare center.”

Our children always enjoyed going, and we always had a very good feeling

“We have had our two girls looked after in daycare for the last 6 years and are very satisfied. Very well thought out concept with its own kitchen and chef and very friendly, empathetic and patient staff. Our children always enjoyed going and we always had a very good feeling. We are happy to recommend this daycare center with a clear conscience. A huge thank you to the great team and all the best for the future”

Children First is a school that blends Montessori-inspired exploration with the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It emphasises holistic development so that kids don’t just memorise numbers or letters – they learn communication and manage emotions.

Another standout feature is their forest kindergarten mornings. They do this once a week, where kids ride the Dolder cogwheel and have fun in the woods. The school ensures that these breaks from the indoor routine are taken to encourage growth.

Another thing I observed was how seriously they take communicating with the parents. They submit detailed six-month reports and secure meetings via their app for a more organised approach.

However, due to the personalised teaching style and low teacher-to-child ratios, they often have waitlists. Enrollees may or may not have a slot secured due to the large number of applicants.

      Pros

      • Uses the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
      • Conducts weekly forest kindergarten mornings
      • Provides a detailed six-month report

      Cons

      • Limited slots due to a large number of applicants

The quality of the teachers is the best I have seen in the city of Zürich

“My toddler has been attending CF for 1.5 yrs (since he was 11 months old) and I could not be happier with the service, care and attention the school provides. The teachers are actually qualified teachers, the support goes beyond daycare services, they have a true independent teaching concept and the teachers genuinely become secondary guardians for children. The quality of the teachers is the best I have seen in the city of Zürich. They have their own outdoor space, which I thought wouldn’t make a big impact but it really does. Our child likes to be outside, come rain, sun or snow, and he is able to do so, in the safe environment of the krippe. The Krippe has become a safe space for us as parents and our son, and the teachers are very collaborative and open to hearing about improvements /parents concerns and any issues.”

Amazing offer of lessons and extra experiences

“Great teachers and amazing offer of lessons and extra experiences. Highly recommended.”

Founded in 1996, Montessori Kinderhaus blends AMS-certified Montessori pedagogy with Canton’s curriculum. They create a learning environment that’s both structured and warm, catering to children from 18 months to 6 years.

I noticed how children were given hands-on activities, self-directed work, and a calm pace that encourages them to focus and think for themselves. They adapt the Montessori principles, which build independence and a sense of order.

While instruction is primarily in German, kids have a steady exposure to English during the week. It’s not a pressured bilingual setup, but more of a natural language usage. I see that kids learn both languages without much effort.

However, some parents look for more structured enrichment in music, sports, or language classes. Since the school’s core is centred on Montessori-based work, the curriculum may feel limited to those seeking broader extracurriculars.

        Pros

        • Uses an AMS-certified Montessori programme
        • Integrates Montessori with Canton’s curriculum
        • Emphasises hands-on, self-directed learning
        • Passive bilingual exposure to English

        Cons

        • May not suit families seeking traditional programmes
        • Less focused on extracurriculars

          A little paradise for children

“We are very grateful to Tatjana and Fabia and the entire children’s home team for the almost three years in which they have accompanied and supported our son with a lot of passion and commitment. We think: The Montessori children’s house is a little paradise for children and an optimal start to (school) life.”

A very positive learning and play place for young children

“I visited this kindergarten as a student to get to know the structure of a Montessori kindergarten. I received a very warm welcome and everything was explained to me in detail. I perceived the kindergarten as a very positive learning and play place for young children and Tatjana as an incredibly warm-hearted and committed person. I can only recommend him to everyone!”

When I learnt about KiddieLand, I was impressed by how big the place is.

They have over 500 metres of land dedicated to classrooms, as well as an indoor playground. This means that compared to others, they can accommodate a large number of applicants.

What stood out to me was their bilingual approach. In the mornings, kids are exposed to Swiss-German and High German, then switch to English in the afternoon. The teachers are native speakers, which makes learning easier and smoother for the kids.

I also appreciated that they applied Zurich’s Lehrplan 21, which focuses on raising well-rounded kids, and just academics. These include competency, language and literacy, creativity, preparation for lifelong learning, and connection with others.

However, some parents noted a lack of structure in the curriculum. Lehrplan 21 is intentionally flexible, allowing the school to adapt its own teaching style rather than following a systematic, common guide.

          Pros

          • A large area that can accommodate many students
          • Teaches both Swiss-German and High German
          • Applies Zurich’s Lehrplan 21 to their curriculum

          Cons

          • Lacks a structured and systematic framework

The teachers and assistants are always friendly and very caring to the children

“We know our little one is in the best hands there. We get regular updates on developments and photos, but the best is we can clearly see the expression of joy when we go there. The teachers and assistants are always friendly and very caring to the children, assisting them, teaching them important skills for their developmental phases, and nurturing their curiosity. The food is excellent, the kids get to enjoy both the special rooms and the outdoors, they get to learn both English and German right from the start. And the schedule is easy for full-time working parents.”

They keep the children engaged with lots of activities

“I’ve been really happy with Kiddieland daycare! The teachers are all incredibly friendly, helpful, and well-prepared. They keep the kids engaged with lots of activities and frequently take them out to the river and nearby playgrounds, which my child loves. The small garden they have is a nice touch too. The food provided is great, and the central location is very convenient. I also love that they use an app to send multiple photos of the kids throughout the day—it’s such a cool way for parents to stay connected. Overall, I can only recommend Kiddieland!”
